Project Area


Kottayam, the land of lakes, letters and latex is bounded on the north by Ernakulam district, on the east by Idukki district, on the south by Pathanamthitta district and on the west by Alappuzha district.  The district extends over an area of 2195.50 sq. km.  It lies between 90, 24’ & 90, 53’ N latitude and 760, 22’ & 770 E longitude and comprises of five taluks, viz., Kottayam, Changanacherry, Kanjirappilly, Meenachil & Vaikom. 

The climate of the area is humid tropical with mean annual temperature of 290 C and an average rainfall of 3411 mm.  In general, the elevation increase from Mean Sea Level in the west to 1195 m above MSL in the east.  The soil of the region is riverine alluvium, silty clay, peat and laterite in texture.   It is acidic in reaction with the pH ranging between 5.0 and  5.4.  The average nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents of the soils are 0.047, 0.009 and 0.004 per cent, respectively.  Combination of the four parameters, viz. altitude, rainfall pattern, soil type and topography influence the configuration of typical agronomic environments wherein a distinct cropping pattern flourishes. The district has been delineated into five agro-climatic zones viz; Kuttanad, Southern Mid Land Zone, Central Mid Land Zone, Malayoram and High Ranges.
