To live a life without malnutrition is a fundamental human right. The right for good food is not a charity, but a societal, household and individual right, ensured by Article 47 of the Indian Constitution. It is the community’s responsibility to find means for better livelihood and avoid social and economic burdens in future. Yet malnutrition exists among women, children and farmers in the rural population, adversely affecting national economy. Thus the scope of H.Sc. Division of KVK is to overcome malnutrition by mobilising farm community more towards agricultureoriented activities in Kottayam district. Access to food is an important indicator of nutritional and economic status of peasant population. The H.Sc. Discipline works towards empowerment of the rural folk in Kottayam, especially women, to become self reliant in food production that will boost their income by adopting more agriculturerelated activities like food processing. Homestead nutritional gardens would be introduced to encourage increased access to foods of high nutritional quality with a view to limit the vulnerability of poor people to episodic poverty. Keeping these objectives, several oncampus, offcampus and vocational training programmes, OFTs and FLDs are planned under H.Sc. Discipline house loans
